Yoga Therapy

Fraser® Rehabilitation Services

The Fraser Yoga Therapy Program promotes the development of motor skills through yoga poses that focus on balance skills, flexibility, and breathing. Exercises are presented through themed activities provided in a fun social group environment; each week is based on a different theme. Each session includes an introduction with singing, warm-ups (breathing exercises) and eye exercises. This leads into stretches and poses.  Sessions are wrapped up with circle time, relaxation, and a good-bye song. Sessions are led by a physical therapist and an occupational therapist.

Research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, asthma, depression, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, and stress. Yoga affects all systems of the body by increasing circulation, oxygen supply, overall balance, function, and better alignment, as well as stimulates the immune system. Yoga has been shown to improve muscle tone, flexibility, strength, and stamina. It can boost self esteem and improve concentration and creativity. Yoga can also create a sense of well being and calm.

This program is through Fraser Rehabilitation Services, which provide comprehensive evaluation, consultation, and treatment services for children with motor and sensory dysfunction, decreased functional and developmental skills, feeding and swallowing difficulties, and speech, language, and hearing disorders. These therapy services are provided with an interdisciplinary approach and each child’s goals and activities are individualized, based on strengths, challenges, and motivations. Fraser therapists collaborate with parents, caregivers, teachers, and mental health practitioners to maximize results.
