The Preschool Mental Health Day Treatment Program serves children who have severe emotional and behavioral disturbances caused by neurological vulnerabilities; traumatic experiences, including abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence; exposure to drugs or alcohol; disrupted attachments to adults and significant changes in the family. These severe problems can interfere with children’s typical development; negatively affect their relationships with family members; and disrupt performance in child-care, educational and social settings.
Children attend the program for three hours a day, five days a week. The program focuses on helping children to form trusting secure attachments to their parents or primary caregivers, which is crucial to their development. In addition, the program helps children to develop adaptive coping, problem-solving, and social skills so that they can regulate their emotions and better control their behavior. Families have strong involvement in the program and receive support and guidance to help them work with their children to transfer these positive coping skills to the home. Inherent in the program are case management services which assist a family in accessing, coordinating and benefiting from other needed services.
The Preschool Mental Health Day Treatment Program is through the Fraser Child and Family Mental Health Program, which provides services for children whose parents or caregivers have concerns about their developmental, behavioral and/or emotional well-being. The program also provides services which assist parents in evaluating and building their skills.
