Workshops

Fraser offers educational workshops and classes taught by experts with many years of experience. Our workshops are designed for families, teachers, care providers, social workers and others who are interested in great training, practical knowledge, skills and access to valuable resources.

Pre-registration is required. If you have a question, or are unable to attend your registered workshop, contact 612-798-8331 or workshops@fraser.org. A full refund is provided for cancellations occurring up to one week prior to the date of the registered class. If cancelling less than one week and up to 24 hours prior to the workshop, you will be credited to a future Fraser workshop. If Fraser cancels a workshop, you will be notified and have the option to attend the rescheduled workshop, receive a credit for a future Fraser workshop, or receive a full refund.

What's Next? Understanding an Autism Diagnosis

This workshop is designed for families of children who have been recently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Parents, grandparents and caregivers are encouraged to attend to learn more about autism, available services and interventions, and helpful tips for families to implement at home, school, and within the community. A panel of parents will share their personal stories and experiences. Representatives from Fraser and other organizations will also offer information and insight into the many community resources.

Autism Spectrum Disorders 101

This workshop provides an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) for families and professionals to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of ASD, the diagnostic process, related terminology, and a brief overview of fundamental strategies and supports. Participants will be better equipped to deal with the emotional challenges of the diagnosis and to know where to find resources and supports in our local community.

Asperger's Disorder: Understanding the Diagnosis

This workshop is an overview of Asperger's Disorder, an autism spectrum disorder characterized by normal or above-average intellectual capability, but having challenges with abstract language, social cognition, and restricted interests and rigid behaviors. A overview of this disorder will be provided, as well as practical tools and strategies that address executive function, social perspective taking, and anxiety management.

Executive Function I

Executive Function refers to the cognitive set of skills we use to solve problems. Executive function may be one of the least studied and most frequently overlooked contributors to academic and behavioral problems. Individuals struggling with Executive Dysfunction are often labeled lazy, forgetful, unmotivated, always late, and easily distracted, Learn how this disorder impacts planning, flexibility, sequencing, emotional regulation, working memory, organization and self-monitoring.

Participants will better understand the development of Executive Function, its role in daily living and learning, and how it is assessed and supported. This workshop is best suited for parents and professionals working with individuals in middle-school through young adults (Aspergers, ADHD, or related disorders).

Executive Function II

Many individuals living with Executive Dysfunction benefit from added environmental support and structure. Join us in discussing 10 basic principles in staying organized and an introduction to both low tech tools like visual structure, calendars, and list systems, as well as high tech tools and apps that support note taking, task management, text readers, and organizational software.

Executive Function I is recommended as a prerequisite to this class. It is best suited for individuals in middle school up to young adults (Asperger's, ADHD, or related disorders.

Transition Considerations for Individuals Interested in Post-Secondary Training

Students with Asperger's Syndrome and executive function deficits often need extra support and advocacy to be ready for college, vocational training programs and other post-secondary education options. Join us in discussing career planning for individuals on the spectrum, social skills readiness, organization, and other executive functions. We will also cover differences between high school supports and accommodations available in post-secondary institutions, and how to utilize IEP's and 504 plans while still in high school to best equip students for post-secondary success.

Transitioning To Adulthood: An Overview

Families are important in supporting the transition to adult life of their teen or young adult. Join us as we look beyond the diagnostics and interventions, toward the world of employment, housing options, community engagement and ongoing social and adaptive skill support.

Participants will learn how to:

Create a team for support and expertise
Maximize school resources
Plan for post-high school training
Access disability support services and resources
Understand the world of employment-different paths for different individuals
Evaluate accommodations that support a self-determined life

Making and Keeping Friends: The Importance of Friendship Skills

Date:	Thursday, May 16 (1:30 - 3:30 p.m.)

This workshop will examine the important relationship between mental health and social development. Participants will explore key friendship skills and social competencies needed for children to be successful in their social relationships. Strategies will include how to use activities to promote pro-social skills to avoid aggression and build self-esteem in all children. (From the Center for Inclusive Child Care)

Scholarships are available for this workshop from the Hennepin County Children's Mental Health Collaborative. These scholarships are targeted to families and child care providers in Hennepin County. Tips for Trips and Summer Fun: Planning Recreational Activities for Kids on the Autism Spectrum

This workshop provides useful tips and strategies for planning successful vacations, field trips and recreational activities for children on the autism spectrum. Included in this seminar will be ideas for recreational activities and how to incorporate therapeutic goals. This seminar is ideal for families, home-based staff, childcare staff and school-age care programs.
